| Located
2 miles west of Madison, South Dakota on the shores of Lake Herman and
situated on 120 acres, Prairie Village has over 40 antique-filled
buildings reliving the days of an active turn of the century main
street. Visit the Lawrence Welk Opera House, sod and log houses, a
small country school, churches and one of the last remaining chapel
railroad cars, the "Emmanuel". See agricultural displays,
steam tractors, a sawmill and much more.
The village is surrounded by 2
miles of railroad track for the Prairie Village, Herman & Milwaukee
Railroad. Stop by the Wentworth Depot and buy a ticket to ride one
of our trains which run on Sundays at 3:00 PM, during Railroad Days and
Jamboree and by special arrangement for groups. Check out one of
America's newest turntables and roundhouse in action.
Ride one of the world's last
remaining steam-powered carousels. The 1893 Herschell Spillman steam
carousel gives rides daily on its German-carved horses to the tune of
great calliope music.
Established on the current site
in 1966, over the years thousands upon thousands of elementary school
children have come to Prairie Village on field trips to have fun while
gaining knowledge and appreciation for how their relatives lived in
eastern South Dakota many years ago.
Our premier event is the Annual
Steam Threshing Jamboree that will be held August 22-24 and will showcase
the J.I. Case Heritage National Exposition. It features parades,
flea market, machinery demonstrations, tractor pulls, musical
entertainment, food and family fun.
Prairie Village offers a Gift
Shop where you can get a souvenir from your visit and get something to
water the whistle or snack on while you wander around the grounds.
Camping is available and we offer 175 camping sites with
electricity. A modern shower house and a RV dump station are
